This recipe popped up on my explore page many times and I finally tried it out this past weekend. I was looking for new breakfast recipes to try out that were quick and easy to put together. I love eggs and was running out of ways to make eggs that wasn't scrambled or over avocado toast. And then this recipe came into my life.
Shakshuka originated in Tunisia and is a popular dish in North Africa and the Middle East. Shakshuka comes from the Tunisian word for "shaken up." The dish consists of a chunky tomato sauce seasoned with garlic, cumin, paprika, and red pepper flakes. The dish is finished off with a runny egg yolk and bread, so you can spoon up the delicious tomato sauce. I think the most important component of this dish is the spices which you cook with the garlic and onions. You can eat this for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It's a simple dish that you can add to depending on the time of day and how hungry you are.
You can make the tomato sauce from scratch or buy tomato sauce from the grocery store. I like to make my own and will have a recipe up soon. One thing you'll find out about me is that I like to measure with my eyes when it comes to cooking. I used to follow recipes to the "T" and as I started getting more comfortable with cooking, I started measuring by taste. Below I'll have the spices and other ingredients I use, however, no measurements. Unleash your inner chef and let me know if you try this recipe out!

To make:
Homemade tomato sauce or store bought. I like to use these tomatoes for my sauce.
Olive oil or tallow
Onion
Garilc
Paprika
Salt
Pepper
Red pepper flakes
Pasture-raised eggs cooked over easy
Sourdough slices
Cook down the onions in olive oil or tallow. Add in your garlic and cook until fragrant. Mix in your cumin, paprika, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Add in your tomato sauce and bring to a soft boil. Crack in your eggs and cook over easy. Serve with sourdough toast. Enjoy!
